There are two key elements for success in collaborative learning situations. One element is establishing the purpose for you and your study group. It can be to learn, review, discuss, critique, and/or prepare for a test. You might want to have a study group get together to discuss the material in the course on an ongoing basis. In courses where there is a great deal of information and much of it is new and unfamiliar; you might want to do this weekly or after each class. 
Study groups are also helpful when you need to study for an exam. Frequently, not everyone has difficulty with the same topics, so teaching each other reinforces the information for the "teacher" and it helps the student master the content
