Academic Expectations

Academic Expectations

From your homework to your project in assignments, the expectations in college are much different. The table below summarizes those differences.

High School College
Homework is assigned, and usually checked, every day. Homework is not always assigned and is not always collected
Most classes don't assign daily readings. The teacher usually exposes students to all needed content. Weekly readings are typical. Students are expected to complete their readings prior to class. Not all content is covered in class but might present in the test.
Small projects & papers are usually assigned a week or two in advance. Students are given time to work on projects during class. Projects & papers are listed in the syllabus and assigned during the first week of school. Students are expected to work on them throughout the sememster but are not always reminded to do so or given time to do it during class.
Ensuring learning is the teacher's responsibility. Teachers will closely follow your progress and try to ensure that students are mastering the material. Teachers will contact parents and guidance counselors if performance is not up to par. Learning is the responsibility of the student. Professors care about students learning but they will not shadow students or contact parents. It is the student's responsibility to make contact with professors and make appointments to discuss any difficulties.
