Most professors have different priorities and expectations than teachers. They expect students to carry the bulk of the load in a class and view themselves as available resources. The table below summarizes those differences.
High School | College |
---|---|
Often students receive a grade for ever assigned piece of work | Grades are not always provided for each assignment |
Homework is graded and can contribute to overall grades | Tests, major papers, and some group activities make up the majority of the grade |
Low grades on preliminary tests may not affect students' final grades | Low grades on initial tests will show students what to expect from testing, but can also be a substantial part of the final grade |
Students are still able to graduate as long as core courses are passed with a D or higher | Students may graduate only if his/her GPA meets the standards for his/her major |
Classes are set up for students to be rewarded for his or her work effort | Work effort is noticed by professors and may sway borderline grades but it will not substitute for quality of work. |
