MEMORY AIDS

Anticipating

If you read or watch a mystery you will tend to remember the details as you read that confirm or contradict the solution you anticipated. Anticipating increases your attention. Before you read, if you think about what the author might tell you then you read with a purpose; that is, you read to find out if you were correct.

You improve your comprehension of the material and remember it better if you anticipate the new information by relating it to what you already know. Before class starts, use the topic of the lecture noted on the syllabus to think about what you previously learned in the course and what you know about the topic in order to anticipate what your professor is about to discuss.

7ways

If you haven't taken the learning assessments yet, do so now. If you took the assessments a while ago, review your responses. Then, notice how the preceding seven suggestions are related to your learning preferences. For example, if your learning preference is the visual modality, then imagining is a particularly effective way for your to remember information in your courses. If your learning preference is kinesthetic, then writing and practicing are effective ways. Auditory learners will find selecting, reciting, and practicing valuable.
