In-lecture Strategies
Here are some ways to improve note-taking during lectures.
- Date and title notes
- Start note-taking immediately.
- Sit in the front of the class to hear better and stay focused.
- Use short telegraphic sentences.
- Maintain eye contact with the lecturer so that you concentrate on what is being said
- Create visual images of what the lecturer is saying
- Watch for the instructor's clues to identify the important information
- Use abbreviations when possible.
- Leave blank spaces for missed information
- Listen for signal words, and phrases such as, first, next, finally, this is important, in summary, to begin, in conclusion, etc.
- Record as much information as necessary so that your notes are accurate and complete
- Try to capture all of the general ideas and as many illustrative details as possible
- If the lecturer speaks too quickly, jot down names, key terms and other important information and supplement your notes afterwards from the text, other student's notes, or handouts.
- Record your notes in a legible and organized manner. Use paragraph indentations or an outline so that the structure of your notes can help you recall the material.
