Method of Loci
This strategy is based on your familiarity with a place and using that to recall information. You will be associating familiar locations to the unfamiliar material you are trying to remember. Imagery is key to the success of this devise. the Link System is basic to Loci, so be sure you know how to do that before you try this.
Elements to be remembered are visualized as parts of a familiar place. The following steps explain what you need to do.
- List the items that you need to remember. For example, Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs: Physiological, Safety, Social Esteem, and Self-actualization.
- Think of a room or other location that is very familiar to you. For example, your bedroom.
- List specific characteristics of the location. For example, list such things as bed, nightstand, dresser, chair, and closet. You should have the same number of items in the location list that corresponds to the number of items that you need to remember.
- Create an image for each item you need to remember. For example, body-builder(physiological), safety pins (safety), a group of girls wearing the letters of their sorority(social), steam pouring from a tea kettle (esteem), and a cocoon opening and a butterfly emerging (self-actualization).
- Link/associate each image with each location characteristic. For example, body-builder sitting on the nightstand, the open dresser drawers are filled with safety pins, an entire sorority sitting in the chair, steam is billowing from the bed, which is in the shape of a tea kettle, and a cocoon opening and a butterfly emerging from the closet. Therefore, you have the five needs that you need to remember as you look around the room: Physiological + Safety + Social + Esteem + Self-actualization = Body-builder + Safety pins + Sorority + Steam + Cocoon = nightstand, dresser, chair, bed, and closet.
