THE ART OF TIME MANAGEMENT

Jim

The allure of video games is intoxicating and, as a result, they are his downfall. When Jim is playing video games, time just seems to fly by. "Every time I sit down at my desk to accomplish something, my friends come into the room and the challenge for a game begins". His attraction to video games is just one of the distractions he experiences. Jim needs to maintain high grades because his financial assistance enables him to attend the university. This financial concern is in addition to the pressure that is placed on him by his parents, siblings, and the academic expectations in his major.

Last semester Jim was frustrated during midterms. "I can't believe that all the professors give tests during the same week. I'll never be able to study for all my exams. "After midterms, and then again after the long nights of doing papers and cramming for final exams, it was obvious to him that more than just attending classes was required to get a good grade and to learning something in his courses. He learned this lesson when he went through cramming for his exams, writing papers the night before they were due, and receiving grades that were a bare minimum of this potential. At the end of the semester, he kept his scholarships so the financial consequences for his study behavior were nonexistent, but the emotional consequences were enormous. "I have so much work to do this week, I'll never get it all done" was the constant mantra in his head throughout exam and reading week. Jim was so stressed during the exam period that friends stayed away and family gave him his distance. Every exam that he took was a reinforcement of the fact that he could do better; if only! None of his exams or papers were an accurate reflection of who he is or his potential. He was disgusted with his performance and how he felt about himself.

Think about these questions

  • What do you do now to manage your time, tasks, and study environment? Why do you do it that way?
  • What indications do you have to tell you that what you are doing is working or not working?
